The DJI AVATA drone comes with three radio modes, according to your geographical location and RF regulation. While the FCC mode (US region) provides a range of up to 10KM, the CE mode (Europe region) has a range of about 2KM. Of course, these distances can be obtained only in optimal conditions, flat ground, no obstacles, and low RF noise. After unlocking FCC mode, the VTX power increased from a few mW to over 1W. Remember that 25mW is the maximum unlicensed power you’re allowed to transmit in many countries worldwide, particularly in Europe (CE). That means performing this range hack without owning the required permits to transmit stronger signals would be illegal.
Transmission Power (EIRP):
- FCC: < 33 dBm
- CE: < 14 dBm
- SRRC: < 30 dBm

Unlocking FCC mode on the AVATA drone is extremely easy. You just need to create an empty plain text file with the name ‘ham_cfg_support’, save it with no extension, and copy it to the root of the micro SD card on the DJI Goggle 2 or FPV Goggles v2. After you restart the goggles and power ON the drone FCC-mode is enabled, you can enjoy the best range regardless of your location. The hack is persistent and DJI Fly APP proof.
